Major League Baseball Considers Midseason World Baseball Classic

The next WBC is expected to occur in 2029 or 2030, and Manfred described it as “an ideal opportunity” for MLB to explore more midseason events. The recent WBC, which concluded with Venezuela's victory, attracted close to 10.8 million viewers for the final game, marking the highest engagement in the tournament's 20-year history.

For MLB to successfully implement a midseason WBC, it would need to negotiate with the players’ union and consider the implications for the All-Star Game, which is under contract with Fox through 2028. Additionally, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora highlighted the logistical challenges, noting that international leagues, such as those in Japan and Mexico, would need to adjust their schedules to accommodate a midseason tournament. Cora emphasized that the complexity increases if the tournament includes teams beyond MLB players, as it would require coordination with various countries.
