UN Expert Accuses Israel of Systematic Torture of Palestinians

A recent report by UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has accused Israel of employing systematic torture against Palestinians in detention. She has called for immediate cessation of all acts of torture and ill-treatment, framing these actions as part of an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

In her report, Albanese urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to seek arrest warrants for several high-ranking Israeli officials, including Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. She emphasized the urgency of international intervention, stating that delays in addressing these issues exacerbate irreversible harm and entrench a system of cruelty.

Albanese's assertions have drawn significant backlash from Israel and its allies. Israeli officials have accused her of harboring an "obsessive, hate-driven agenda" aimed at delegitimizing the state of Israel. Additionally, France and Germany have called for her resignation following controversial remarks made during an Al Jazeera forum. Albanese has faced accusations of misrepresentation, particularly regarding her comments about Israel being a "common enemy of humanity," which she clarified was taken out of context.

While Albanese's report presents a detailed account of alleged abuses, it has been met with skepticism from Israeli officials, who dispute the characterization of their detention practices.
