Undercover Police Officer Exposed by Blunder in Spycops Inquiry

An undercover police officer, identified by the alias Simon Wellings, has admitted to being exposed as an infiltrator due to a significant blunder during his covert operations. This incident was discussed in the ongoing spycops public inquiry, which is investigating the activities of approximately 139 undercover officers who infiltrated leftwing activist groups over several decades. Wellings, who operated within a covert unit of Scotland Yard, mistakenly recorded a conversation with other officers while attempting to retrieve the phone number of an activist. The call inadvertently went to the activist's voicemail, capturing him discussing campaigners and their identities.

Wellings was part of the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS), a secretive police division tasked with monitoring political groups. His infiltration of the anti-capitalist group Globalise Resistance occurred between 2001 and 2007, during which he submitted around 4,000 surveillance reports detailing the personal and political lives of activists. These reports included sensitive information such as bank accounts and personal relationships. Following his exposure, Wellings was expelled from Globalise Resistance after activists recognized his voice from the recorded conversation.

Wellings stated, “I have no idea … I don’t really understand what ‘mount a destructive operation’ means.” He acknowledged his responsibility for compromising his undercover role but defended the integrity of his reports, asserting that he aimed to accurately reflect what he observed.
