MLB Implements New Gambling Safeguards Amid Indictments

In the wake of indictments against two Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers, Luis Clase and Ortiz, for allegedly participating in a scheme to rig bets on MLB games, the league has announced new safeguards regarding prop bets on pitches thrown. Effective immediately, all MLB Authorized Gaming Operators will cap wagers on pitch-level markets at $200 and exclude these bets from parlays. MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. emphasized the importance of this action, stating that it addresses the integrity concerns posed by pitch-level markets.

Clase and Ortiz face multiple charges, including wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery. According to the indictment, the defendants coordinated with co-conspirators to agree on specific pitches they would throw, allowing bettors to place fraudulent wagers based on this insider information. The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that bettors won at least $400,000 using this information related to Clase’s pitches, with Ortiz accused of receiving $12,000 to intentionally throw a ball instead of a strike in two games.

The indictment, which was filed and unsealed recently, claims that Clase's involvement in the scheme began in 2023, while Ortiz allegedly joined in 2025. Both players have been placed on non-disciplinary leave during the 2025 MLB season as the investigation unfolds. Their attorneys have maintained their clients' innocence, asserting that there is no credible evidence against them.

The MLB's decision to implement these betting restrictions comes amid a broader context of integrity concerns in professional sports. Similar allegations have surfaced in other leagues, including the NBA, where figures such as Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier have faced scrutiny in separate federal gambling investigations.
