Hong Kong Postage Rates to Increase Amid Rising Oil Prices

Hong Kong will implement a postage rate increase effective April 13, 2023, due to surging oil prices linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The cost of posting local letters will rise by 9 percent, bringing the price to HK$2.40 (approximately 31 US cents). This adjustment aims to address escalating operational costs, particularly in conveyance and terminal dues payments.

According to Hongkong Post, the new rates will affect over 90 percent of local mail and surface mail, with increases generally capped at HK$0.20. Airmail rates will see a slightly higher adjustment, with 90 percent of airmail costs rising by no more than HK$0.50. Specifically, the cost for a local letter weighing 30 grams or less will increase from HK$2.20 to HK$2.40. Additionally, airmail to mainland China and Taiwan will rise from HK$3.70 to HK$3.90, while rates to other international destinations will adjust from HK$4 to HK$5.50, now ranging from HK$4.20 to HK$5.80.
