August Media Group Partners with Roye Okupe for "Malika: Warrior Queen"

Singapore’s August Media Group has joined forces with U.S.-based Nigerian author and director Roye Okupe for the animated feature film “Malika: Warrior Queen.” This project marks Okupe’s transition from television to film, following the success of his animated superhero series “Iyanu,” which has gained significant popularity among children on platforms like Cartoon Network and HBO Max. The film is inspired by Okupe's graphic novel and is set in 15th century West Africa, focusing on the life of Malika, a queen and military commander who strives to maintain peace in her expanding empire.

August Media Group will finance up to one-third of the production and marketing costs for “Malika: Warrior Queen” and will oversee animation production in collaboration with various studios and artists across Asia. This partnership aims to blend Okupe’s Afro-Anime visual storytelling with the expertise of talented animation studios in Asia, enhancing the film's artistic dimension. The film is produced by Okupe’s YouNeek Studios in collaboration with former DreamWorks executive Doug Schwalbe and Emmy-winning producer Randy Dormans.
