Rising Risks for Seniors During Heat Waves

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open highlights that urban-dwelling seniors may face increased risks of heat-related illnesses at lower temperatures than currently recognized by city heat emergency protocols. Researchers found that the likelihood of heat stroke and death among seniors significantly rises when the heat index reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two consecutive days. Currently, cities like New York issue heat alerts when the heat index hits 95 degrees for two days or 100 degrees for any duration.

Dr. Alexander Azan, the study's senior researcher and assistant professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, emphasized the urgency of this finding, stating, “We now know that emergency department use among vulnerable older patients spikes at around 90 F as opposed to 95 F.” The study tracked emergency room visits of patients aged 65 and older across two New York City hospitals from 2022 to 2024, revealing a concerning trend of nearly 17% annual increases in heat-related deaths since 2016.

Data Insights from Emergency Room Visits

The research analyzed 55,200 emergency room visits, involving approximately 15,100 unique patients at one hospital and nearly 19,600 at another. The first hospital serves a diverse patient population with a higher proportion of Medicaid-covered individuals, while the second hospital caters to a wealthier demographic. Notably, the risk of heat-related emergencies began to rise at temperatures as low as 66 degrees at the first hospital, peaking between 90 and 101 degrees. Researchers estimated that adjusting heat alerts to trigger at 90 degrees could have prevented around 116 emergency visits during the study period.

Conversely, no significant correlation between heat and health emergencies was observed at the second hospital, indicating disparities in how heat impacts different socioeconomic groups.

Tailoring Heat Warnings for Communities

The study suggests that heat warning protocols may need to be customized based on the specific communities served by hospitals. Dr. Leora Horwitz, co-author and director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science at NYU Langone, stated, “By leveraging electronic health record data, health care systems can customize heat warning interventions to save lives and improve health during extreme heat events.” Researchers plan to further investigate how social inequities contribute to the heightened risk of heat-related illnesses among older adults.
