Research from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) indicates that the number of countries facing critical food insecurity could nearly triple to 24 if global temperatures rise by 2°C. This analysis highlights that poorer nations will be disproportionately affected, with food systems in low-income countries deteriorating seven times faster than those in wealthier nations. Currently, approximately 59% of the global population resides in countries with below-average food security, and the IIED's projections suggest that climate change will exacerbate this disparity.
Ritu Bharadwaj, a researcher at IIED and author of the study, emphasized that countries already grappling with poverty and limited safety nets are expected to experience the most rapid decline in food systems, despite contributing minimally to global emissions. The Food Security Index and Climate Sensitivity
The IIED developed a Food Security Index that evaluates the vulnerability of food systems in 162 countries under three temperature increase scenarios: 1.5°C, 2°C, and 4°C above preindustrial levels. This index assesses the impact of climate change on four critical pillars of food systems: availability, accessibility, utilization, and sustainability. The findings reveal that sustainability and utilization are the most sensitive to climate change, indicating that early signs of climate damage will manifest in water, sanitation, and health systems, leading to malnutrition even when food is available.
Implications for Low-Income Countries
Under a 2°C scenario, food insecurity in low-income countries is projected to rise by an average of 22%, with some nations experiencing increases of over 30%. In contrast, high-income countries are expected to see only a 3% increase in food insecurity. Notably, low-income countries contribute merely 1% of global emissions, while high- and upper-middle-income nations account for over 80%. Bharadwaj noted that while high-income countries will face significant agricultural shocks, their wealth allows them to mitigate domestic crop failures by purchasing food on the global market.
National Security Concerns
Bharadwaj also referenced a report from British intelligence officials warning that systemic collapse in fragile and conflict-affected states could lead to global instability, state failure, and forced migration. She stated, “If fragile and conflict-affected states face a systemic collapse, the result is massive global instability, state collapse, and forced migration. That is the national security threat the defence chiefs have warned about.”
