Dr. Yael Admi, chair and co-founder of WWP, articulated that the initiative is not a response to the ongoing war with Iran but a proactive measure taken “despite this moment.” She highlighted the urgency of addressing the conflict, stating that women are often told to wait for a more opportune time to discuss peace. The group aims to create a plan for the post-conflict period to prevent an “endless war” and ensure Israel's future prosperity. Dr. Admi described the significance of the barefoot walk, symbolizing a connection to the land that has borne the weight of loss, stating, “we want to feel the ground, it is soaked with the blood of our children, and from that pain and grief, we want to bring hope.”
Seeking Courage and Will
The women involved in the initiative are not advocating for a specific solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but are instead calling for the courage and will to pursue peace. Dr. Braudo-Bahat emphasized the need for women’s voices in decision-making processes, arguing that solutions must consider community needs beyond territorial disputes. She referenced the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland as a cautionary example, noting that while it moved the country away from violence, it has not achieved lasting peace.
A Call to Leaders
The initiative sends a clear message to Israeli and Palestinian leaders: negotiations must begin to establish a political horizon for peace. Dr. Braudo-Bahat insisted that the women want to be involved in the peace process, stating, “we are the voices on the ground.” Activist Orna Ashkenazi shared a personal story about her grandson's longing for home, underscoring the emotional stakes of the conflict. She urged Israeli leaders to look at past peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan as evidence that peace is achievable.
Criticism of Naivety
Dr. Admi addressed skepticism surrounding their initiative, asserting that those who believe repeating past actions will yield different results are the true optimists. She concluded, “We say naive are the ones who think that doing the same thing over and over again will give them better results.”
