Iranian Israelis Observe Nowruz Amidst Conflict and Loss

Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebrated on March 21, marks the arrival of spring and is traditionally observed with the "Haft-sin," a table arrangement of seven symbolic items. This year, however, the festivities among Iranian Israelis are subdued due to the ongoing conflict and recent violence in Iran. Sahar Saidian, an Iranian Israeli and editor for Kan television, noted that while they typically celebrate with music and dancing, they have opted for a more somber observance in light of the recent protests and casualties in Iran.

The Iranian government reported 3,117 deaths during widespread protests in December and January, but estimates suggest the number could be over 36,000. The ongoing war, which began with U.S. airstrikes alongside Israel targeting Iranian regime assets, has further complicated the emotional landscape for Iranian Israelis. Saidian expressed the pain felt by the community, stating, “When the massacre happened, it entered a place deep in my heart.”
