Push for Stronger Animal Protection Laws in the Philippines

This incident, along with others like the beating of Axle, an American bulldog, has highlighted the inadequacies in the enforcement of existing animal welfare laws.

In response to these incidents, a coalition of animal welfare organizations, including the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (Paws), is advocating for two new legislative bills aimed at strengthening animal protection. The proposed laws would establish dedicated animal protection officers in every police station and create a national oversight body to handle cruelty cases more effectively. Anna Cabrera, executive director of Paws, expressed disappointment over the leniency of current penalties, noting that the maximum fine for killing a dog is 100,000 pesos, yet judges often impose minimal fines.
