Concerns Over Bias in Arabic-Language Wikipedia

A report released by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) has raised alarms regarding the integrity of the Arabic-language version of Wikipedia, highlighting systemic bias and the prevalence of extremist propaganda. The report asserts that key articles related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly those discussing the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, significantly violate Wikipedia's neutrality policies. It claims that up to 50 percent of citations in these articles originate from sources affiliated with terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

The WJC's findings indicate that influential administrators within the Arabic Wikipedia community have publicly dismissed the principle of neutrality as a "Western concept." This rejection has reportedly led to the blocking or banning of editors who attempt to introduce neutral language or verified facts into articles. The WJC emphasizes that the implications of allowing terrorist propaganda to masquerade as neutral information extend beyond Wikipedia, potentially influencing emerging AI platforms that rely on multilingual sources for information.

Yfat Barak-Cheney, executive director of the WJC’s Institute for Technology and Human Rights (TecHRI), stated, “When terrorist propaganda and hate-driven narratives are allowed to masquerade as neutral information, the consequences extend far beyond Wikipedia itself.” This concern is particularly pressing given Wikipedia's status as one of the most visited websites globally, with an estimated 3.3 billion monthly visits. The Arabic-language site alone receives approximately 95 million hits per month, making it a significant source of information for millions.

In light of these findings, the WJC has urged the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia, to enhance oversight and implement new monitoring mechanisms. The organization argues that these reforms are essential to prevent local administrative biases from undermining the global policies of the platform.
