During a recent masterclass at Series Mania in France, Russell T Davies, the showrunner and writer of "Doctor Who," expressed concerns about the negative influence of social media on fandom. He specifically criticized the platform X, referring to it as a “hate site,” and warned that the hostile online voices do not represent the broader fan community. Davies emphasized the distinction between the online discourse and the actual fan base, stating, “I think they are different things. I know they’re different things, I absolutely know that.”

Davies highlighted the troubling trend of minority voices, often filled with hatred, gaining traction in mainstream media. He noted that the recent portrayal of Ncuti Gatwa as the first openly queer Black actor in the role of the Doctor has unfortunately led to an increase in racist and homophobic commentary online. He attributed this phenomenon to the decline of traditional journalism, which has allowed these extreme opinions to be quoted in reputable outlets, further amplifying their reach. “That’s where the danger point happens of the minority voices slipping more into the mainstream,” he remarked.

Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by online hostility, Davies maintained that fandom can still be a positive and creative space. He encouraged fans to engage in respectful disagreement, stating, “Fandom is creative and brilliant and fun, but it’s all getting soured.” He also advocated for limiting social media exposure for younger audiences, suggesting, “Turn those phones off for anyone under 16, chuck them in the bin. I literally am evangelical about it.”
