Like many others, he found himself unemployed and returned to his parents' home in the Midlands, England. The hospital library, filled with unconventional literature, became a refuge for Steiner. He immersed himself in works such as Jerzy Kosinski’s *Being There*, Luke Rhinehart's *The Dice Man*, and Jack Kerouac's *On The Road*, which contrasted sharply with the somber atmosphere of the hospital.

He began contributing music reviews to various websites, gaining valuable experience that eventually led to the publication of his novel, *Politics of the Asylum*, by Urbane Publications. Following this, he authored several non-fiction titles, including *Into The Never*, an exploration of Nine Inch Nails' influential album *The Downward Spiral*, and *Silhouettes and Shadows: The Secret History of David Bowie's Scary Monsters*, which chronicles David Bowie's life during a transformative period in 1980. His latest work, *Darker with the Dawn: Nick Cave's Songs of Love and Death*, is set to be reissued by Bloomsbury, highlighting his ongoing engagement with significant musical figures.
