Japan's Historic Military Participation in Philippine Drills

For the first time since World War II, Japanese ground forces will actively participate in military exercises on Philippine soil. Scheduled for April, approximately 300 personnel from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force will join the annual Salaknib army drills alongside the Philippine and US militaries. This development signifies a notable strengthening of military ties between Japan and the Philippines amid rising tensions with China. Philippine Army spokesperson Louie Dema-ala confirmed the participation, noting that Australia will also be involved in the exercises.

Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the historical significance of this event, stating, “After 1945, for the very first time, we will have again Japanese combat troops on Philippine soil.” He highlighted the transformation of relations between the two nations, which were once adversaries during the war but are now united in military cooperation.

The joint military exercises come in the context of increasing maritime disputes between both Japan and the Philippines with China over the East and South China Seas. The reciprocal access agreement between Japan and the Philippines, which took effect last year, facilitates mutual military visits and has paved the way for this deeper collaboration. Brawner also mentioned that Japanese soldiers are expected to participate in the larger Balikatan exercises, the flagship military drills between the Philippines and the US, later in April.
