Moreover, MM was shown to enhance FC between the default mode network (DMN) and the prefrontal cortex, indicating a positive impact on cognitive functions. The research also highlighted that MM improved connectivity within the frontal-striatal pathway, which is essential for cognitive control and managing cravings. The findings indicate that patients with IGD-D often experience impaired connectivity in this pathway, leading to difficulties in regulating gaming cravings and anhedonia—a common symptom of depression. Comparison with Progressive Muscle Relaxation

The study included a control group practicing Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), which also showed some symptom relief but did not achieve the same level of improvement as the MM group. While PMR demonstrated a placebo effect, it lacked the cognitive engagement that characterizes MM. This distinction underscores the unique benefits of mindfulness practices in treating IGD-D.

Future Directions and Limitations

The study acknowledges limitations, including a homogeneous participant group of college students with IGD-D, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Future research should aim to include a more diverse population and explore individual neurochemical data to better understand the mechanisms at play. Additionally, improved analytical methods are needed to avoid potential biases in FC analysis.
