Cleveland Explores Future Development Plans for Burke Lakefront Airport

Cleveland city officials have unveiled conceptual designs for the future of Burke Lakefront Airport, which is currently under scrutiny for its financial viability and land use. The proposals include an 18-hole public golf course, a beachside promenade with restaurants, an upscale hotel, and a youth sports center. These developments aim to transform the airport's 450 acres of lakefront property into a vibrant recreational area, potentially generating an estimated $800 million in economic impact and $6 million annually in tax revenue. Scott Skinner, the waterfront authority czar, emphasized that these concepts are preliminary and intended to spark public discussion rather than serve as definitive plans.

Public interest in repurposing Burke Lakefront Airport appears strong, with nearly 90% of 2,400 respondents to a recent survey supporting the idea of a more accessible lakefront. City Council has been actively engaging with residents through information sessions to gauge their opinions on the airport's future. Skinner noted that the proposed developments could significantly enhance park space along the lakefront, increasing it by 422 acres.

The proposed projects are expected to be funded by private developers rather than city funds. Skinner and Deputy Chief of Staff Jessica Trivisonno clarified that the envisioned recreational facilities could be constructed on the airport's dredged land, despite concerns about soil contamination. Skinner stated, “We’ve come to the conclusion that low density, these sort of recreation uses, can be built on Burke without any unusually high costs.”

In anticipation of the airport's potential closure, city officials have begun discussions with stakeholders, including a coalition of Burke tenants, regarding traffic management and infrastructure adjustments. Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne suggested that nearby airports could accommodate any displaced traffic. Trivisonno highlighted that many corporate partners do not utilize Burke, opting instead for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
