The U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ) announced in 2024 that it had incinerated its remaining stockpiles of firefighting foam, yet concerns remain regarding historical contamination.

In response to the findings, the Okinawa prefecture has sought access to U.S. military bases for further water sampling, a request that has been denied by USFJ. The military's rationale was that the evidence linking its installations to the contamination was insufficient. However, the environmental division plans to reapply for access, citing an expert committee's investigation that suggests MCAS Futenma is likely responsible for the organic fluorine contamination detected nearby.

The Okinawa government has urged residents to avoid drinking from contaminated water sources, highlighting the potential health risks posed by the elevated PFAS levels.

While the Okinawa government continues to advocate for further investigation and transparency from U.S. military installations, USFJ maintains that the evidence does not conclusively link their operations to the contamination. The situation remains contentious, with ongoing discussions about environmental responsibility and public health safety in the region.
