Father-Son Vespa Journey: A Pilgrimage from Australia to Italy

Mario Gabrieli, 54, and his 11-year-old son, Leonardo, are undertaking a significant journey on a vintage 1976 Vespa, traveling from Sydney, Australia, to Trieste, Italy. Their adventure, initially planned as a coming-of-age pilgrimage, has been complicated by global events such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, fuel shortages, and border restrictions. The duo aims to complete the journey in approximately ten months, navigating through various countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, China, and potentially Azerbaijan.

The journey has not been without its difficulties. Upon entering Thailand, Gabrieli encountered fuel restrictions limiting purchases to 10 liters, with about 70% of petrol stations closed. This has made planning fuel stops challenging, as the Vespa has a range of only 150 kilometers. Gabrieli noted, “At the moment, I’m not thinking too much. I’m just going. And it’s incredible that you can always find a way.” Despite these hurdles, the pair has embraced the unpredictability of travel, with Gabrieli emphasizing the importance of flexibility and adventure.

Throughout their travels, Gabrieli and Leonardo have been welcomed by various Vespa communities across Asia, which have provided support and hospitality. Gabrieli remarked on the unique bond that the Vespa creates, stating, “It becomes almost like a passport because it’s such an iconic vehicle.” Their journey has also allowed them to document their experiences on social media, gaining a following and even earning Leonardo the nickname “Indonesia’s Justin Bieber.”

Leonardo has expressed the joy of meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. He recounted a memorable moment in East Lombok, where a local began dancing in the rain, prompting others to join in. “The places are all so new … And you’re like, ‘wow’! And you feel the adventure,” he said. The journey has not only been about reaching Italy but also about the experiences and lessons learned along the way.

If they successfully reach Europe, Gabrieli plans to reunite with his partner and Leonardo’s mother, Jocelyn, spending two months in Trieste before returning to Australia for Leonardo's schooling. Gabrieli views this journey as a way to instill a sense of adventure in his son, stating, “I started with the mentality that to take Leonardo on a journey with no planning and be open to what happens on the road really is the point.”
