China Introduces New Methodology for Evaluating Academic Journals

Chinese researchers have unveiled a novel methodology for assessing medical and life science journals globally, moving away from the traditional reliance on the “impact factor.” This initiative is seen as part of China's broader strategy to enhance its “academic discourse power.” The new evaluation system, known as the Dongbi Index, was introduced on March 21 in Shanghai and encompasses two journal lists: one for 4,027 medical journals and another for 3,064 life-science journals, selected from a pool of over 40,000 worldwide.

The Dongbi Index was developed by Dongbi Data, a Shenzhen-based data technology firm, in collaboration with the Institute of Medical Information & Library, which is affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Wu Dengsheng, the founder of Dongbi Data and a professor at Shenzhen University’s College of Management, emphasized that the team has created “a multidimensional, multilevel evaluation system centred on research quality.” This approach aims to provide a more comprehensive assessment of journal performance beyond the limitations of the impact factor.
