Brotherhood Mission to Israel: Solidarity Amidst Conflict

In late February 2023, a group of 35 American men embarked on the third annual Jewish National Fund-USA Brotherhood Mission to Israel, intending to engage in a weeklong service trip. However, the mission quickly transformed as the Israel-Hamas war erupted shortly after their arrival. Co-chaired by Dr. Steve Katz and Michael Segal, the participants, hailing from diverse states including Texas, Maryland, New York, and Utah, found themselves in a situation that deepened their commitment to supporting Israel. Katz recounted, “We arrived on Wednesday morning. The war broke out Saturday at around 8 a.m. That’s when the first air raid siren hit.”

Initially designed to provide acts of kindness and support for those affected by the conflict, the mission extended to nearly two weeks due to travel disruptions. Participants collaborated with Israel’s Home Front Command and the Jewish National Fund-USA affiliate Special in Uniform, which integrates young adults with disabilities into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Katz described the experience as “humbling and inspiring,” highlighting the skills of these individuals in organizing supplies. The group also attended a program by Next October, which aims to establish startups in memory of victims from the October 7 attacks, emphasizing healing through innovation.

Throughout their mission, participants engaged with soldiers experiencing severe psychological distress, referred to as trauma stress disorder (TSD). Katz noted the importance of therapeutic programs supported by Jewish National Fund-USA, stating, “These places are saving lives.” The mission also fostered a sense of community, as participants shared moments of joy and solidarity with Israeli families during air raid sirens. They organized various acts of service, including a blood drive, grocery shopping for supplies, and preparing food packages for Air Force pilots.

Despite security concerns, the group hosted a Purim celebration in Caesarea, inviting soldiers from Unit 9221. Katz remarked on the joy shared with these soldiers, who appreciated the support before their missions. The mission also included building a children's play area and providing food and music to tank crews stationed in isolated outposts. A senior Israeli official's visit provided insights into Israel's strategic situation, reinforcing the alignment between Israel and the United States.

The Brotherhood Missions have collectively raised over $5 million for Israel, with participants committing to a minimum fundraising goal of $18,000. Katz emphasized the mission's success in engaging individuals in Jewish communal life, stating, “People come on this trip, and something changes.” Plans for a fourth mission are already underway, scheduled for February 24, 2027, with hopes of expanding participation to include non-Jewish allies.
