The Kindness Challenge: A Vending Machine for Good Deeds

The Kindness Challenge, initiated by Michigan artist Andrea Zelenak, began nearly four years ago when she transformed an old bait and tackle vending machine into a tool for promoting kindness. In 2022, Zelenak set up this refurbished vending machine on Monroe Avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with the aim of making acts of kindness accessible to the community. The machine dispenses color-coded challenges—green for easy, yellow for medium, and pink for difficult tasks—encouraging users to engage in small acts of kindness.

The vending machine operates like a traditional one, accepting cash, coins, and tap payments, with each challenge costing $3. The funds collected are reinvested into creating more kindness challenges. Each envelope dispensed contains items necessary to complete the assigned act of kindness, which may include giving a warm hat to someone in need, sharing a stick of gum, or writing a thank-you note. Since its inception, the machine has traveled across Michigan, participating in various art festivals and retail districts, and is currently located outside Zelenak's store, Inkcourage, in Detroit.

As of 2026, The Kindness Challenge has inspired thousands of participants, with Zelenak reporting over 3,000 acts of kindness dispensed during a recent event called ArtPrize. Zelenak emphasizes the importance of these small actions, stating, “If somebody says something kind to you, you will remember that for maybe a week, or five years, or the rest of your life.” She believes that the impact of these acts may be profound, even if it is difficult to quantify.
