Concerns Over Conditions at Dilley, Texas ICE Detention Center

Recent reports have raised serious concerns regarding the conditions at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, where families, including young children, are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Congressman Joaquin Castro, a Democratic representative from San Antonio, highlighted the plight of a two-year-old boy named Kaleth, who is reportedly suffering from a fever and inadequate medical care. Castro stated that detainees have complained about the food quality, alleging it contains mold and worms. He criticized the facility's staff for dismissing the mother's requests for assistance, labeling the situation as "shameful" and calling for the immediate closure of the detention center.

The Dilley facility, operated by the private corrections company CoreCivic, has faced scrutiny for its treatment of detainees, particularly children. Reports indicate that families have experienced shortages of clean drinking water, chronic sleep deprivation, and difficulties accessing hygiene supplies and medical attention. In February, the facility reported two cases of measles, further raising alarms about the health risks present in the detention environment. CoreCivic, which anticipates generating $180 million in annual revenue from the facility through at least March 2030, has denied allegations regarding inadequate healthcare and access to clean water.
