Karen Lawrence Sentenced for Mortgage and Pension Fraud

Karen Lawrence, a 66-year-old woman from Kilmarnock, Scotland, has been sentenced for embezzling nearly £100,000 through a fraudulent scheme that involved impersonating her husband, John Lawrence. Between February 2019 and February 2020, she executed a series of deceptive calls to a mortgage firm and a pension company, adopting a male voice to convince staff that she was her husband. This elaborate ruse allowed her to illegally obtain a total of £99,659.12.

Lawrence's fraudulent activities included three calls to Precise Mortgages in July 2019, during which she secured a loan of £54,557.47 by falsely claiming to be her husband. Subsequently, she transferred £54,000 from their joint account into various other accounts. Additionally, she contacted Fidelity Pension multiple times, impersonating her husband to withdraw £45,101.68 from his pension. The Crown Office confirmed that Lawrence had previously pleaded guilty to forming this fraudulent scheme.

At Ayr Sheriff Court, Lawrence was sentenced to a community payback order requiring her to complete 300 hours of unpaid work within 12 months. She was also placed under supervision for two years and received a six-month restriction of liberty order, which mandates her to remain at home from 8 PM to 6 AM. Furthermore, she was issued a 10-year non-harassment order prohibiting any contact with her husband.
