Severe Thunderstorms Devastate Northern Vietnam

Severe thunderstorms, accompanied by hail, strong winds, and lightning, struck northern Vietnam from March 29 to 30, 2026, resulting in significant human and material losses. The storms led to four fatalities and nine injuries across several provinces, including Tuyen Quang, Son La, and Quang Ninh. The Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported extensive damage, with 13 houses completely destroyed and over 6,500 others affected.

Electrical infrastructure was impacted, with 21 power poles toppled and two transformer stations in Hanoi affected.

In response to the ongoing threat, the VDDMA has implemented 24/7 surveillance of weather patterns and issued timely forecasts to support local actions. Local authorities have been instructed to remain vigilant and respond promptly to any emerging threats. Meteorological experts predict that a weak cold air mass will arrive from March 31 to April 1, potentially leading to further thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds in the northern and north-central regions.
