The collagen proteins typically used for dating have been eroded by mineral-rich water, leading to contamination of the bones with carbon and other minerals. To address this issue, the team is attempting to date the calcite crusts that formed on the bones after their deposition in the cave. While this method will not yield precise dates, it will help establish a minimum age for the fossils, potentially confirming their association with a warmer climatic phase in Texas' history.
