Exceptional Minds Expands into Game Arts Production

Exceptional Minds, a North Hollywood-based non-profit training academy, has been dedicated to integrating young adults on the autism spectrum into the digital arts for over 15 years. The organization has successfully facilitated pathways for its students, many of whom have secured competitive positions at major companies such as Disney TV Animation, CBS Sports, DreamWorks Animation, and Marvel. As the entertainment industry evolves, Exceptional Minds is adapting its curriculum to include a new Game Arts program, reflecting the growing intersection of gaming and digital arts.

Under the leadership of CEO Lauren DeVillier, who joined in July 2025, Exceptional Minds is broadening its focus beyond visual effects and animation to include game production. The Game Arts program will cover various aspects of gaming, including 2D illustration, pixel art, vector art, and 3D modeling, alongside core concepts of game and narrative design. DeVillier emphasizes the importance of this expansion, stating, “Game Arts was such a natural fit... this generation is huge gamers.” The program aims to prepare students for opportunities in a multi-billion dollar industry, particularly as job prospects for animators and VFX artists have become increasingly challenging.

In addition to the Game Arts program, Exceptional Minds is exploring adjacent markets for its graduates, including an internship initiative focused on marketing within the medical field. This diversification aims to provide students with broader opportunities to practice their art and secure employment. DeVillier notes, “We’re really trying to push into other areas outside of entertainment,” highlighting the organization's commitment to adapting to changing job markets.

Students at Exceptional Minds have already begun to make significant contributions to notable projects, such as Netflix's "Bridgerton." Participant Lily Yllescas expressed pride in her involvement, stating, “It is wonderful that my work is on a show that is very well known, liked, and discussed.” Yllescas appreciates the representation of inclusivity in shows like "Bridgerton," which features characters with disabilities, aligning with her values and aspirations as an artist.
