British RAF Gunners Achieve Historic "Ace" Status for Drone Engagements

Four gunners from the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) have become the first ground-based personnel to earn the title of "aces" by successfully shooting down Iranian drones during operations in the Middle East. This designation, historically associated with pilots who downed five or more enemy aircraft during World War II, has now been adapted to recognize the achievements of these ground forces. The UK Ministry of Defense (MOD) announced this milestone, highlighting the increasing complexity of aerial threats faced by British forces.

The RAF gunners achieved their "ace" status by each downing five or more Iranian drones, which have been deployed in swarming tactics that pose significant risks to personnel and infrastructure. Since the onset of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran on February 28, British forces have encountered persistent attacks from one-way drones targeting UK and Allied assets. An officer from the MOD noted that a notable engagement on March 23-24 marked the most effective defensive outcome achieved in a single night to date.
