Restoration of Covington Cathedral Culminates with Final Gargoyle Installation

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky, has completed a significant two-year restoration project, culminating in the installation of the last gargoyle atop its facade. This restoration, which cost nearly $8 million, was primarily funded through donations and aimed to address the deterioration of the cathedral's stone, metal, and glass features. The cathedral, which is modeled after Notre Dame in Paris, is notable for its European gothic architecture, offering a unique cultural experience in the Midwest.

The cathedral, which has stood for 125 years, faced critical structural issues highlighted by the discovery of a large piece of stone that fell from its exterior in 2018. This incident prompted the Very Rev. Ryan Maher, the cathedral’s rector, to initiate a comprehensive evaluation of the facade. The restoration included the recreation of 32 gargoyles, alongside repairs to finials, arches, and balustrades, ensuring the preservation of this historic landmark.

Brian Walter, CEO of Trisco Systems, the contractor for the project, described the installation of the final gargoyle as a monumental occasion, symbolizing the completion of extensive facade work.
