Rare 1953 Patek Philippe Ref. 2523 Heures Universelles Set for Auction

The upcoming Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: XXIII in May 2026 will feature the 1953 Patek Philippe Ref. 2523 Heures Universelles, a highly coveted wristwatch that is considered a significant event in the horological community. This particular model is an 18k yellow gold version with a polychrome cloisonné enamel dial depicting a map of South America. It is one of only two known examples in yellow gold and one of three featuring the South America design, making it exceptionally rare. The Heures Universelles, or world time wristwatch, was developed by Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottier in the early 1930s. Cottier's invention allowed for the simultaneous display of time across Sir Sandford Fleming’s 24 time zones through a system of rotating city rings. Patek Philippe recognized the potential of this mechanism and began producing its own models, with the Ref. 2523 being part of the second generation of its world-time offerings. Only approximately 29 examples of the Ref. 2523 were ever made across all variants, including yellow, pink, and white gold, as well as those with enamel dials.
