This figure represents more than a fourfold increase from 2021's estimate of 1,230 bilbies.

Similarly, at Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary in the Northern Territory, the population has surged from 66 founder bilbies to approximately 530, aided by above-average rainfall.

Bilbies play a crucial role as ecosystem engineers, reshaping their environment through their foraging and burrowing activities.
