The presidents of the European Biological Rhythms Society, the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms, the Japanese Society for Chronobiology, and the Canadian Society for Chronobiology have highlighted that changes to the light-dark cycle could disrupt biological clocks in humans and animals, affecting sleep, hormone secretion, and even the migration patterns of nocturnal species.
Dr. Miroslav Kocifaj from the Slovak Academy of Sciences noted that the existing number of satellites has already increased night sky brightness by approximately 10%. He predicts that by 2035, this could rise significantly, approaching levels that threaten the preservation of naturally dark skies. Prof. Tami Martino from the University of Guelph emphasized that circadian systems are sensitive to light levels that humans may not perceive as bright, suggesting that even subtle increases in brightness could have profound ecological consequences.
Criticism and Calls for Caution
In a joint letter from the World Sleep Society, European Sleep Research Society, Sleep Health Foundation, Australian Sleep Association, and Australasian Chronobiology Society, the authors stated that "circadian disruption is not mere inconvenience; it is a physiological mechanism driving major adverse health consequences." They argue that the alteration of the night sky should be treated with the same seriousness as other significant environmental changes, such as climate change.
Ruskin Hartley, CEO of DarkSky International, emphasized the need for a comprehensive environmental review before advancing such proposals, citing potential public safety risks from intense glare or blinding flashes if systems malfunction. He warned that as satellite numbers grow, they could outnumber visible stars, fundamentally altering the human experience of the night sky and impacting species that rely on star navigation.
