Stray Dog Kayla's Journey to Recovery at Green Lake Area Animal Shelter

Kayla, a 3-year-old cattle dog mix, was brought to the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter in Wisconsin on March 15 after being found as a stray by the local sheriff’s department. Initially, the shelter staff did not recognize the extent of her medical needs, although there were early warning signs, including her appearance and the odor of her urine. Shelter manager Katrina Rogers noted that Wisconsin law mandates a holding period during which certain medical procedures cannot be performed. After this period, the shelter was able to conduct tests that revealed Kayla was suffering from Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and a urinary tract infection.

The shelter attempted to contact Kayla's previous owner, who declined to reclaim her, stating that she was "too much of a hassle for just a farm dog." Following the expiration of the holding period, the shelter proceeded with necessary medical treatments for Kayla's conditions. Lyme disease and anaplasmosis are both tick-borne infections that can significantly affect dogs, leading to symptoms such as fever, lethargy, and joint pain.

Rogers indicated that a follow-up exam will help determine when Kayla will be ready for adoption. While her physical health is improving, Kayla's emotional recovery is also underway.
