Galdikas' Relentless Pursuit

Biruté Galdikas spent two months searching for orangutans in the Indonesian Borneo rainforest.
At age 25, she left a comfortable life in Los Angeles to pursue this fieldwork.
Each day she trekked up to twelve miles through forests, facing fire ants, pit vipers, leeches, and heavy rain.
In her 1995 memoir, Galdikas says she returned to her hut drenched in sweat, feeling the orangutans had left to frustrate her efforts.
