The PFBR, which is the first indigenous Fast Breeder Reactor in India, has been fully designed and constructed by BHAVINI, with contributions from over 200 Indian industries, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The PFBR will initially utilize Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel, with plans to incorporate Thorium-232 as a blanket material in future stages. Through a transmutation process, thorium will generate fissile Uranium-233, which is intended for use in the third stage of India's nuclear program, thereby facilitating the full utilization of the country's thorium reserves.

The PFBR is classified as an advanced third-generation reactor, equipped with inherent passive safety features that ensure a prompt and safe shutdown in emergencies. This focus on safety aligns with global standards and reflects India's commitment to responsible nuclear energy development.
