Ukraine's deep-strike drone program is encountering significant obstacles due to a looming shortage of mini jet engines, which are essential for the operation of advanced drone systems. Mini turbojet drones, which are faster and more cost-effective than traditional propeller-driven models, allow Ukraine to conduct strikes deep within Russian-held territories. According to Fabian Hoffmann, a senior research fellow at the Norwegian Defence University College, the production bottleneck in mini-jet engines is a critical issue that could hinder Ukraine's missile drone output. Several European companies are central to the mini jet engine market. Czech-based PBS Group has significantly increased its production capacity, expecting to expand output eight-fold by the end of 2026. PBS's turbojet engines power key Ukrainian drone models, including the Palianytsia, which can reach speeds of up to 900 kilometers per hour. Other notable manufacturers include Germany's JetCat and the Netherlands-based Destinus, which are also supplying engines to Ukraine.

Despite the growing demand, large aerospace manufacturers like GE Aerospace and Rolls-Royce have largely avoided this segment, focusing instead on more lucrative fighter-jet engines. This limited number of producers contributes to the supply constraints, as noted by Dominic Surano, director of special projects at Nordic Air Defence.

Future Prospects and Market Dynamics

To address the supply crunch, PBS plans to double its output at its Czech facility over the next two years. New entrants, such as the German drone maker Quantum Systems, are also emerging in the market, indicating a potential shift in production dynamics. Czech defence group CSG aims to produce approximately 1,000 turbojet engines in 2026, with a significant portion allocated for Ukraine.

The market for mini jet engines is described as "very fast and very hectic," according to Pavel Cechal of CSG, reflecting the urgent need for increased production capabilities. As Ukrainian drone manufacturers explore in-house engine development, including testing a low-cost pulsejet engine known as Hrim-17, the overall landscape remains uncertain.

Estonian defence investor Ragnar Sass remarked, "It is peanuts compared to what Ukraine needs," highlighting the disparity between current production levels and the demands of the Ukrainian military.
