Surge in Electric Vehicle Registrations Amid Global Oil Crisis

4/8/2026, 4:37:05 AM

Record Growth in the UK and Australia

The electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing unprecedented growth in both the UK and Australia, driven by rising fuel prices and geopolitical tensions. In March 2026, the UK saw a 24.2% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, totaling 86,120 units, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This surge contributed to a total of 380,627 new vehicle registrations, marking the best March since 2019. The overall electrified vehicle registrations reached a record high of 196,059, showcasing the impact of manufacturers' investments in decarbonizing road transport.

In Australia, the market share of fully electric vehicles reached a record 14.6% in March, with EVs comprising one in seven new cars. This increase is attributed to concerns over fuel supply amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted crude oil supplies. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's expedited visit to Singapore aims to secure fuel deliveries, reflecting the urgency of the situation.

Factors Driving the Shift to Electric Vehicles

The growth in EV registrations in both countries is largely driven by consumer demand for energy security and cost predictability. In the UK, private demand surged, with retail registrations rising by 10.1%. Melanie Lane, CEO of Pod, emphasized that external pressures, such as fuel price volatility, are influencing consumer behavior towards electric vehicles. Similarly, in Australia, Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted that disruptions in fuel supply have led more consumers to consider EVs.

Industry leaders are calling for improved infrastructure to support this transition. Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, highlighted the need for a charging network that keeps pace with the growing number of electric vehicles on the road. Tanya Sinclair, CEO of Electric Vehicles UK, pointed out that public hesitation from industry stakeholders could deter potential EV buyers, stressing the importance of building consumer confidence through reliable experiences.

Official Statements and Industry Perspectives

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, remarked on the strong performance of the new car market, while also cautioning about the economic challenges posed by the Iran conflict. He stated, “Much of March’s performance will be from orders placed before the start of the Iran conflict, which threatens to raise the cost of living, undermining consumer confidence.”

James Court, Public Policy Director at Octopus Electric Vehicles, noted that the market is responding to the petrol price crisis, emphasizing the need for consistent messaging from both industry and government to maintain momentum in EV adoption.

Conflicting Reports and Future Outlook

While the data indicates a significant shift towards electric vehicles, some industry experts caution that it is too early to determine if this trend represents a permanent change in consumer behavior. Tony Weber, CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, stated, “It is too early to determine whether this represents a structural shift in the market.”

As both the UK and Australia navigate the challenges posed by rising fuel prices and geopolitical instability, the future of electric vehicles appears promising, contingent upon continued investment in infrastructure and supportive policies.
