Canadian Solar Inc., through its energy storage division e-STORAGE, has announced plans to supply 420 MWh AC of battery energy storage systems for two significant projects owned by Drax Group, a leading renewable energy company in the United Kingdom. The projects include a 60 MW / 120 MWh AC installation in Marfleet, England, and a 150 MW / 300 MWh AC installation in Neilston, Scotland. Originally developed by Apatura, a UK-based energy infrastructure company, these projects were acquired by Drax and are now part of its FlexGen portfolio. Installation at the Marfleet site is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2026, while the Neilston project is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Enhancing Grid Flexibility and Renewable Integration

The battery systems provided by e-STORAGE will support Drax's growing portfolio of flexible generation assets and enhance the UK's energy infrastructure. Long-Duration Energy Storage Developments in Northern Ireland

In a related development, Capital Dynamics and Solo Renewables have formed a joint venture to construct a long-duration energy storage (LDES) project in Islandmagee, Northern Ireland. This 150 MW battery project, which will provide up to 1,200 MWh of storage capacity, has received planning approval from the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. The £100 million project is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the integration of renewables in Northern Ireland, particularly ahead of the Renewable Electricity Price Guarantee (REPG) scheme set for 2027.

Barney Coles, senior managing director at Capital Dynamics, stated that long-duration storage is essential for managing renewable variability and enhancing grid resilience as renewable generation expands. The growing interest in LDES across the UK is evident, with other projects, such as a 500 MW/4,000 MWh LDES project in Bedfordshire and a 50 MW/300 MWh liquid air energy storage project in Carrington, also underway.
