Texas Republicans Face Challenges Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick expressed significant concerns regarding the Republican Party's ability to maintain its majority in the Texas House during the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Speaking at the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s annual conference in Austin, Patrick emphasized the necessity for unity among Republicans, particularly in light of the contentious Senate primary runoff between U.S. Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton. The winner of this runoff will face Democratic candidate James Talarico, who has already secured his party's nomination.

Patrick warned that without a cohesive endorsement from the losing candidate in the runoff, the GOP risks losing the Senate seat, which could lead to Democratic control of the upper chamber in Washington. He highlighted the potential repercussions of a divided Republican Party on down-ballot candidates, recalling the 2018 midterms when Democrats flipped 12 seats in the Texas House. Currently, Republicans hold 88 of the 150 seats in the House, and Democrats would need to flip at least 14 seats to gain a majority.

The Republican Party has maintained control of the Texas House since 2003. However, recent electoral trends indicate a growing challenge, particularly after Democrats won a special election for a Senate seat in a district that President Donald Trump had previously carried by 17 points in 2024. Patrick's remarks reflect a broader unease within the GOP regarding potential backlash against Trump’s policies, especially as no Democrat has won a statewide election in Texas since 1994.
