Keanu Reeves Supports Young Filmmaker in "Madwoman’s Game" Documentary

"Madwoman’s Game," a documentary directed by Zach Zamboni, follows the journey of Bianca Mitchell-Avila, who conceived the project at the age of 16. The film aims to empower women in the male-dominated world of chess, showcasing Mitchell-Avila's experiences as she prepared for a climactic chess battle against a renowned opponent. Initially a student project intended for a local film festival, the documentary evolved significantly after Keanu Reeves agreed to come on board as an executive producer.

Mitchell-Avila reached out to Reeves in 2021, proposing the idea of an epic chess battle featuring him. To her surprise, Reeves responded positively, expressing admiration for her ambition and vision. Although Reeves does not appear in the final documentary—due to the lengthy development process—he played a crucial role in supporting Mitchell-Avila's creative vision. He described his involvement as being a champion for the project, stating, “In this case, my description of [being an] executive producer was being attached to the project.”

The documentary was produced in collaboration with UltraBoom Media and Sugar23, alongside Reeves and Carla Berkowitz, whom Mitchell-Avila refers to as her “film industry mom.” Throughout the production, Reeves acted as a mentor, providing guidance based on his extensive experience in Hollywood. Mitchell-Avila noted that Reeves was genuinely engaged during their discussions, emphasizing that he listened and cared about her ideas. Even while filming in Europe, he made time to connect with her, demonstrating his commitment to the project.

Mitchell-Avila aims to present a different narrative surrounding chess, moving away from the academic portrayal often seen in media. She believes that chess fosters community and connection, stating, “It brings people together. There’s a community around it.” Reeves echoed this sentiment, recalling his own brief experience with chess in high school, where he played for just one year.

Looking ahead, both Mitchell-Avila and Reeves express a desire to eventually realize the envisioned chess battle. Reeves stated, “I don’t want to play digital,” to which Mitchell-Avila agreed, emphasizing her preference for in-person chess. Their collaboration on "Madwoman’s Game" not only highlights the challenges faced by women in chess but also showcases the supportive relationship between a young filmmaker and an established actor.
