Surge in Political Security Spending Amid Rising Threats

In the latest general election cycle, approximately $41 million was allocated for personal, event-related, or cyber security for federal candidates, marking a significant increase from the estimated $8 million spent during the 2015-2016 election cycle. This surge in security spending is closely linked to a rise in violent rhetoric and threats against public officials, with a reported 241 percent increase in such rhetoric between 2021 and 2025, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Additionally, there was a nearly 90 percent rise in federal charges related to threats against public officials from 2016 to 2025.

During the 2024 election cycle, former President Donald Trump was notably the target of two assassination attempts, one of which resulted in the death of a rally-goer and injuries to Trump himself. Consequently, security measures at his rallies were heightened, with over $1.8 million spent on event-related security, a substantial increase from $570,000 a decade prior. Trump's campaign also faced cybersecurity threats, allegedly from foreign actors, leading to nearly $1 million spent on digital security.

The political climate has seen both liberal and conservative figures attributing extreme views to one another, which they argue incite radical actions. For instance, Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, a Democrat, acknowledged sending violent messages against his opponents, while Democratic lawmaker Jasmine Crockett faced backlash for urging rally-goers to "fight back" against the Trump administration.

The trend of violence against political figures has escalated, with several high-profile incidents making international headlines. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family survived an assassination attempt when a perpetrator set their home ablaze. Additionally, Melissa Hortman, a former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, was assassinated alongside her husband, while state senator John Hoffman and his wife narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on the same night. Right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was also killed during an event for his organization, Turning Point USA.

In the 2023-2024 election cycle, around $305,400 was spent on home security measures, reflecting the heightened risks faced by political figures.

In response to the rising threats, there has been a bipartisan condemnation of radical rhetoric from both sides of the political spectrum. This collective acknowledgment underscores the urgent need for addressing the escalating violence and threats against public officials.
