Thailand's Major Crackdown on Cross-Border Cyber Scammers

4/10/2026, 12:40:08 PM

Asset Seizures and Allegations

Thai authorities have recently seized assets valued at 8.3 billion baht (approximately US$260 million) linked to a money-laundering network involved in transnational cyber scams operating from Cambodia. This operation, led by the Anti-Money Laundering Office, has brought the total assets confiscated in the ongoing investigation to over 20 billion baht. The seized assets include cash, vehicles, bank deposits, and various securities.

The network is reportedly connected to several key figures, including South African-born businessman Benjamin Mauerberger, also known as Ben Smith, and Cambodian tycoon Yim Leak, along with their spouses and a Thai woman who facilitated financial transactions for them. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that the accused individuals are not only involved in scam operations but also in drug-related crimes. Mauerberger has been implicated in cross-border investment fraud dating back to 2016.

Background of the Investigation

The crackdown on this cyber scam network is part of a broader effort by Thai authorities to combat increasingly sophisticated and widespread scams that have victimized tens of thousands of citizens. The Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of addressing these crimes, which have led to significant financial losses for many individuals. Earlier this year, authorities confiscated 68 items worth 12.1 billion baht from the same group, including land, condominiums, luxury cars, yachts, and substantial bank funds.

Official Statements & Responses

In a briefing, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated, “The threat from scammers is becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread, with tens of thousands of our people falling victim and losing everything. My fellow citizens and the international community want these crimes to be dealt with decisively.” This statement underscores the government's commitment to tackling the issue of cybercrime and protecting its citizens.

Criticism & Opposition

While the crackdown has been largely supported, there are voices of dissent regarding the effectiveness of the measures taken. Critics argue that despite the asset seizures, the root causes of cybercrime remain unaddressed, and more comprehensive strategies are needed to prevent such scams from proliferating.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

There are discrepancies in the reporting of the total value of assets seized, with some sources indicating varying figures for earlier confiscations. Additionally, the specific details surrounding the legal proceedings against Mauerberger and Leak remain unclear, as their lawyers have denied the charges against them.

What's Next

As the investigation continues, Thai authorities are expected to pursue further legal actions against those involved in the scam network. The government aims to enhance its regulatory framework to better combat cybercrime and protect citizens from future scams.
