The Artistic Journey Behind Rory McIlroy's Masters Tribute

In April 2025, Rory McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam with a victory at Augusta National, prompting him to commission artist Keegan Hall for a tribute drawing. This project not only highlights McIlroy's achievement but also showcases Hall's intricate artistic process.

Keegan Hall, 44, grew up in a trailer park in Sumner, Washington, with aspirations of becoming a Disney animator. After earning an art degree from the University of Washington, he initially abandoned his artistic ambitions due to skepticism about making a living in the field. Following the death of his mother, who had always encouraged his art, Hall returned to drawing as a tribute to her. His early works gained traction on social media, leading to commissions from notable figures like Michael Jordan and NFL players Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman.

Hall dedicated approximately six months, or 600 to 800 hours, to create the drawing of McIlroy at the 2022 CJ Cup. Using a single Pentel Graphgear pencil, Hall meticulously captured the scene, which included thousands of faces in the gallery and the architectural details of Augusta National. He described the process as a mental and technical challenge, stating, “You can get so lost so quickly... There’s zero margin for error in any of this stuff.” Hall's attention to detail extended to replicating the grass on the 18th green, which required careful consideration of light and shadow.

Upon completing the drawing, Hall sent it to McIlroy's team, receiving an enthusiastic response from one of McIlroy's representatives, who exclaimed, “HOLY S—,” reflecting the impact of Hall's work. This reaction underscored the emotional significance of the tribute for both the artist and the golfer.

While Hall's artistic skills are widely praised, he faced significant challenges during the creation of the McIlroy piece. He noted the difficulty in accurately depicting architectural elements, stating, “These damn buildings, man...
