Four British Nationals Apprehended at US-Canada Border in Maine

On April 3, 2023, four British nationals—Ali Mohammed Ali Abdullah, 18, Hameed Mohammed Nagi, Ibrahim Ayyub Khan, and Mohammed Sultan Saleh—were apprehended by U.S. authorities after allegedly crossing into the United States through remote woods connecting Canada to Maine. The group was spotted by two maple sugar workers who reported their suspicious activity to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. The men initially claimed they were unaware they had entered the U.S., but GoPro footage revealed them celebrating their arrival on American soil.

The incident began when the maple sugar workers observed the four men walking along the Golden Road, a 96-mile unpaved logging road that leads to the Quebec border. After alerting authorities, a CBP officer and a Border Patrol agent followed the trail and discovered fresh footprints. The four men were found attempting to conceal themselves in dense vegetation near mile marker 87. Initially, they maintained that they were merely hiking and did not realize they had crossed the border.

Further investigation revealed that Saleh had conducted internet searches related to travel in the region, including inquiries about the St. Zacharie border crossing. The officers also discovered a gray Nissan vehicle nearby, which was out of gas. Inside, they found two U.S. citizens, one of whom was armed with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun. This led authorities to suspect a potential alien smuggling operation.

The four men have been charged with Entry Without Inspection, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of six months in federal prison and a $5,000 fine. All four have pleaded not guilty and are currently held without bail. Abdullah, identified as the lead defendant, has a prior deportation record and was denied an extension of his U.S. visa in March 2025. He had entered Canada on April 1, 2023, using a UK passport.

The investigation continues as law enforcement seeks to determine the purpose of the men's attempted entry into the U.S. Prosecutors have noted that Abdullah waived his right to a preliminary hearing and detention hearing, agreeing to remain in custody ahead of his trial scheduled for June 3, 2023. Nagi, Khan, and Saleh also have related cases pending in the same district.

While the apprehension of the four men has been met with scrutiny regarding border security, there are concerns about the treatment of individuals attempting to cross borders under various circumstances. Critics argue that the legal repercussions for such actions may not adequately address the complexities of immigration and asylum-seeking processes.
