Psilocybin Therapy: A New Hope for Veterans with PTSD

In recent years, psilocybin, the active compound in "magic mushrooms," has gained attention as a potential treatment for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Jesse Gould, an Army ranger who experienced traumatic brain injuries and developed PTSD after three combat deployments in Afghanistan, founded the Heroic Hearts Project. This nonprofit organization facilitates retreats where veterans can use psilocybin and ayahuasca to address their trauma. Gould's personal experience with psychedelics led him to believe they could help prevent veteran suicides, a pressing issue given that the suicide rate among U.S. veterans was 35 per 100,000 in 2023, more than double that of the general population.
