Demonstrators in Ottawa Call for Continued U.S. Military Pressure on Iran

On Saturday, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa to advocate for sustained military pressure on Iran amidst ongoing conflict and communication restrictions within the country. The rally coincided with the first day of face-to-face talks between the U.S. and Iran in Pakistan, raising concerns among participants about the potential outcomes of these discussions.

Soorena Noori, co-founder of the Iran Revival Hub, emphasized the dire situation faced by Iranians, stating, “Today is the 43rd day that Iranian people are under the Internet blackout.” This blackout has severely limited communication for those with family in Iran, as Noori shared his own struggles to connect with relatives. Behrooz Sharif Naeini echoed this sentiment, expressing deep personal concern for his family, stating, “It’s more than a month now that I don’t have any contact with them.”

Demonstrators voiced apprehension that the ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations might overlook the needs and demands of the Iranian populace. Negar Movahedi, another participant, articulated fears that any agreements could inadvertently solidify the current Iranian leadership. “Even if they get to a deal … nothing goes back to normal,” she stated, highlighting the ongoing executions and Internet shutdowns in Iran. Movahedi asserted that continued U.S. intervention is crucial for the hope of a free Iran, saying, “At this moment, I think our only hope to a free country is the help of U.S.”

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating at least 3,000 deaths in Iran, alongside 2,020 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel, and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states. The war has also disrupted the Persian Gulf's integration into the global economy, leading to soaring energy prices. As the situation evolves, demonstrators in Ottawa are calling for international support to ensure that the voices of the Iranian people are not marginalized in diplomatic negotiations.

Participants at the rally expressed a unified message that the U.S. and Israel should not abandon the efforts to support the Iranian populace. Noori stated, “What people inside Iran are demanding … is that the job that has been started by the U.S. should not be left in the middle and undone.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern that the outcomes of international talks may not align with the aspirations of those suffering under the current regime.
