Overview of New Satellite Designs
U.S. defense contractors BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin are intensifying their investments in maneuverable satellite designs, responding to military demands for "dynamic space operations." At the recent Space Symposium, both companies presented plans for demonstration spacecraft capable of maneuvering in orbit, coordinating with other satellites, and operating within more integrated architectures. BAE Systems introduced its Ascent spacecraft, designed to be refuelable and capable of carrying payloads of approximately 2,200 kilograms. The first pathfinder launch for Ascent is targeted for 2027, aimed at a classified customer.
Lockheed Martin also unveiled its Next-Generation Space Dominance (NGSD) line, which includes the NGSD Vanguard small satellite and the larger NGSD Sentinel, both designed for autonomous maneuvering and coordination. These satellites are expected to conduct on-orbit demonstrations by 2028 or 2029.
Key Features of the Ascent Spacecraft
The Ascent spacecraft is part of BAE Systems' Elevation line, designed to enhance space operations and support various missions, including those in cislunar space. It features advanced maneuverability, high-thrust propulsion, and the ability to serve as a "space tug" for transporting payloads between orbits. The spacecraft can operate across multiple orbital environments, including low Earth orbit, medium Earth orbit, and geostationary orbit.
Thai Sheridan, BAE's Vice President of Military Space, emphasized that Ascent is designed to counter emerging threats in cislunar space and to support multi-mission capabilities. The spacecraft's rideshare capability allows for multiple payloads to be deployed from a single launch, enhancing mission flexibility.
Lockheed Martin's Strategic Focus
Lockheed Martin's investment in satellite technology is also driven by the need to address the evolving landscape of orbital warfare. Tim Lynch, the company's Vice President of Mission Strategy, noted that the satellites are intended to demonstrate rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO), which involve approaching and inspecting other spacecraft in orbit. This capability is increasingly critical as U.S. officials cite advancements from adversaries like China and Russia in satellite maneuverability.
The larger NGSD Sentinel variant is being positioned for potential bids on the Space Force’s RG-XX program, which aims to procure geostationary surveillance satellites. Lynch stated, “The basic technologies have been proven. What these demonstrations are about is showing that we can do it at scale.”
Criticism and Market Dynamics
The push for maneuverable satellites comes amid competition from newer space companies that are developing agile, software-defined spacecraft. Critics argue that the existing military satellite fleet, designed for long-duration missions with limited propulsion, may not adequately address the needs of a contested space environment. This shift in focus reflects a broader recognition of the strategic importance of space in modern conflict.

Sheridan remarked, “We’re seeing commercial interest in what we’re doing as well as government interest as well as civil interest.
