Dropout, the indie streaming platform formerly known as CollegeHumor, has officially submitted two of its flagship series, “Game Changer” and “Very Important People,” for consideration in the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards. This marks a significant moment for the platform as it seeks recognition in a competitive landscape, particularly following changes in Emmy categories.

The Television Academy has recently merged the categories for outstanding talk series and scripted variety series into a single “outstanding variety series” category. This decision was influenced by a decline in eligible late-night talk shows and sketch series. The Academy's Board of Governors had previously attempted a similar merger in December 2020 but faced backlash, leading to a retraction. The new structure designates the outstanding variety series category as an “area” award, where nominees must achieve at least 90% approval from Emmy voters to win, differing from traditional category awards.

Vic Michaelis, an actor and writer who identifies as non-binary (they/them), is a notable figure in this Emmy submission. They will be competing in the lead comedy actress category for their performance on “Very Important People.” Additionally, Michaelis is expected to appear on the Emmy ballot for their roles in other productions, including the supporting comedy actress category for Peacock’s “Ponies” and guest drama actress for ABC’s “The Rookie.” Dropout CEO Sam Reich, who hosts “Game Changer,” is also in contention for the game show host category.
