Hong Kong Charity Innovates Guide Dog Breeding to Meet Demand

Hong Kong Seeing Eye Dog Services is pioneering a breeding program aimed at increasing the supply of guide dogs for the visually impaired. The charity is breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Golden Retriever, creating a mixed breed known as "goldadors." This initiative comes in response to a significant gap between the number of applicants for guide dogs and the available canines, with only 10 percent of applicants ready for immediate pairing. Jasmine Tang Yau-sheung, head of operations at the charity, highlighted that despite the upcoming birth of goldadors, the overall number of guide dogs still falls short of demand.

This breeding program marks the third local initiative by Hong Kong Seeing Eye Dog Services since the establishment of its guide dog training school in Ta Kwu Ling in late 2022. Prior efforts included breeding four purebred Labradors and seven mixed-breed Labradoodles. The charity aims to leverage the favorable traits of both parent breeds to enhance the effectiveness of guide dogs. According to Tang, Labradors are known for their friendly and obedient nature, while Golden Retrievers are recognized for their intelligence. The combination of these qualities is expected to yield a superior guide dog.
