Identification of the Martin Family: A Cold Case Resolved After 65 Years

In December 1958, the Martin family from Portland, Oregon, consisting of Kenneth (54), Barbara (48), and their three daughters—Barbara (14), Virginia (13), and Sue (11)—set out on a trip to gather greenery for Christmas decorations. Their journey took a tragic turn when they disappeared after stopping for gas near Cascade Locks, Oregon, located approximately 43 miles east of Portland. Initial speculation suggested that their vehicle may have gone over a cliff and into the Columbia River, prompting one of the largest manhunts in Oregon's history. In 1959, the bodies of Virginia and Sue were recovered from the river, but the case went cold as the remaining family members were never found.

The case remained unresolved until 2024, when diver Archer Mayo discovered a vehicle submerged in the Columbia River. Following this, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office employed a crane to retrieve the vehicle in 2025. However, only the undercarriage was successfully extracted, leaving the passenger cabin upside down and buried in sediment. Despite this, the sheriff's office was able to confirm that the vehicle belonged to the Martin family. In August 2025, Mayo located human remains within the wreckage, which were subsequently handed over to the sheriff's office for further investigation.

The medical examiner's office collaborated with Othram, a company specializing in cold case resolutions through DNA analysis. They extracted DNA from the skeletal remains, ultimately producing a usable profile. This profile was compared to relatives of the Martin family, leading to the identification of Kenneth Martin. The sheriff's office confirmed that, based on the circumstances of the remains' recovery and anthropological assessments, the identities of Barbara Martin and her daughter Barbie were also established.
